Clinical Research Fellowship in Allogeneic Blood and Marrow Transplantation

A Global Fellowship Program

Between 2015 and 2024, the Clinical Research Fellowship Program in Allogeneic Blood and Marrow Transplantation trained 108 physicians from around the world. The program has made a meaningful contribution to the Canadian healthcare workforce, with 20% of its fellows choosing to continue their careers in Canada. 


It has also cultivated a strong and globally diverse clinical team: 90% of current staff completed their fellowship at Princess Margaret Hospital within the Allogeneic Blood and Marrow Transplantation program, reflecting an exceptional ability to develop and retain talent. Overview

The Princess Margaret Cancer Centre offers a rigorous two – year Clinical Research Fellowship in Allogeneic Blood and Marrow Transplantation, focused on developing advanced clinical expertise in transplant medicine. This program is designed for physicians seeking specialized training in the care of patients undergoing allogeneic transplantation for a variety of hematologic and oncologic conditions

Clinical Training

Fellows receive extensive hands-on experience in:

  • Pre – and post – transplant patient management
  • Acute and chronic graft – versus – host disease (GVHD)
  • Infectious complications
  • Emerging comorbidities such as metabolic disorders and secondary malignancies

Training also includes exposure to donor search coordination, apheresis procedures, graft processing, and cryopreservation techniques.

Quality & Safety Focus

A strong emphasis is placed on quality control throughout the transplant process. Fellows gain insight into protocols for stem cell procurement, infusion, and post – transplant monitoring, ensuring safe and effect ive patient care.

Research & Education

Fellows are encouraged to participate in:

  • Clinical trials and research projects
  • Regular teaching rounds and formal educational sessions (eligible for CME credits)
  • Educational activities that foster collaboration and knowledge exchange

Professional Development

By the end of the fellowship, trainees will be equipped to:

  • Function as medical experts in allogeneic transplantation
  • Serve as health advocates and leaders within their healthcare teams
  • Communicate and collaborate effectively in multidisciplinary environments

Minimum Requirements:

  1. Subspecialty training in Internal Medicine, Hematology and/ or Medical Oncology
  2. Eligibility for licensure through the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Ontario (CPSO)
