NURSERY AND FINISHER FEEDING

Feeding Systems in Pig Nurseries and Finisher Barns

Feeding in pig nurseries and finishers is typically conducted with groups of animals of similar age receiving the same diet through fill systems that direct feed to bulk feeders located in the pens. The most common feeding methods utilize flex auger systems or chain disk systems that transport feed from bulk bins situated outside and next to the livestock facility.

Feed storage (bins) and sensors:

Feed bins come in a variety of types and sizes. They are usually made of galvanized steel or a poly material. Bins are typically sized to hold 7-10 days’ worth of feed per ration. Bin sensors are used to measure and track the amount of feed in the bins as well as the rates of consumption.
